Background

Revenu Québec faced a pivotal moment in its design journey, seeking a transformation toward a contemporary, functional, and accessible design system aligned with the WCAG 2.1 AA criteria. The challenge included bridging the gap between the existing outdated design system, KX, and the in-progress ISA system. My role was to collaborate with accessibility specialists, developers, and UX designers across different teams, aiming to establish design and usage standards, while fostering a user-centric evolution in the organization’s UX practices.

Project Dynamics

The project unfolded in the midst of an ongoing initiative, where my team was tasked with crafting the design system to be utilized by project design teams. The reconciliation process involved aligning the goals and visions of these distinct teams. The primary aim was to instill fundamental design concepts that could permeate the evolving ISA design system, fostering unity and congruence across the organization.

Key Steps

  1. Collaborative Framework:

    • Working closely with accessibility specialists, developers, and project UX designers, a collaborative framework was established to ensure a holistic approach to design system development.
  2. Reconciliation Efforts:

    • The project involved bridging the gap between the existing KX design system and the emerging ISA system. Reconciliation efforts focused on harmonizing the objectives of the project design teams with the overarching goals of the design system team.
  3. Fundamental Concepts Establishment:

    • Essential design concepts were identified and established as the building blocks of the new design system. These concepts aimed to bring cohesion and consistency to design practices throughout the organization.
  4. Documentation for Clarity:

    • Every decision and design aspect underwent meticulous documentation. This transparent documentation ensured that choices made and expected behaviours were accessible to all team members, fostering a shared understanding.

Outcomes

  1. Unified Design System:

    • The collaborative efforts and reconciliation strategies resulted in a more cohesive design system that seamlessly integrated the existing KX and the emerging ISA, providing a unified foundation for the organization’s design teams.
  2. Cultural Shift Towards User-Centricity:

    • The project catalyzed a cultural shift, steering the organization toward a more user-centric approach in UX practices. The establishment of fundamental design concepts served as a guiding light for teams navigating the evolving landscape.
  3. Documented Decision-Making:

    • Transparent documentation proved to be a valuable resource for team members, ensuring clarity on design choices and providing a reference for consistent implementation throughout the organization.

Conclusion

The evolution of Revenu Québec’s design system stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, reconciliation, and a commitment to user-centric principles. This case study highlights the importance of establishing foundational concepts, fostering unity, and providing transparent documentation to guide organizations through transformative design endeavours.
